Edward Luttwak discusses strategy and geopolitics at Yeshiva University event

On December 2, 2024, the Straus Center for Torah and Western Thought at Yeshiva University hosted a discussion with Dr. Edward Luttwak, an esteemed author and strategist. The event took place at the Hertog Foundation offices in Washington, D.C., where Rabbi Dr. Meir Soloveichik led the conversation.

Rabbi Soloveichik referenced Luttwak's essay "Give War a Chance" (1999) to explore his realist approach to strategy and critique of "performative" politics. Luttwak emphasized that Israel should focus on dismantling Hamas’s infrastructure following the October 7 attacks rather than mere retaliation. He praised Netanyahu’s firm stance against hostage families' demands but criticized extremist factions within his government.

Luttwak also discussed global defense issues, highlighting inadequate defense spending by Taiwan and NATO allies as examples of performative politics. He suggested that the U.S. should pressure these allies to fulfill their defense commitments instead of relying heavily on American intervention.

Reflecting on Jewish political behavior, Luttwak noted that Jews excel in many areas but struggle in politics due to a lack of sovereign state experience and sentimental political attachments. This has led to support for policies not aligned with their interests.

Regarding American policy in the Middle East, Luttwak pointed out the strategic benefits of maintaining a presence in Syria and suggested that Iran's waning revolutionary ambitions offer an opportunity for the U.S. to reduce Tehran’s influence.

Throughout the evening, Luttwak stressed clarity, pragmatism, and decisive action in geopolitics over empty rhetoric. His insights underscored the importance of concrete actions across various geopolitical challenges.
