Adriano Espaillat, a member of the U.S. Congress representing New York's 13th district, has recently shared his thoughts on human rights and the death penalty through a series of tweets. Espaillat, who has been serving in Congress since 2017 after succeeding Charles Rangel, is known for his advocacy on various social issues.
On December 10, 2024, Espaillat commemorated the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights with a tweet expressing pride in standing with the Equality Caucus to continue efforts to protect and ensure human rights for LGBTQI+ individuals. He stated: "76 years ago, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was adopted! On #HumanRightsDay, I'm proud to standing with the @EqualityCaucus to continue our efforts to protect and ensure human rights of LGBTQI+ people!"
In another tweet posted later that day, Espaillat reiterated his commitment to human rights in Spanish. He expressed similar sentiments about supporting LGBTQI+ rights alongside the Equality Caucus: "¡Hace 76 años, se adoptó la Declaración Universal de Derechos Humanos! En el #DíaDeLosDerechosHumanos, estoy orgulloso de unirme al @EqualityCaucus para continuar nuestros esfuerzos por proteger y garantizar los derechos humanos de las personas LGBTQI+."
Later that afternoon, Espaillat addressed the issue of capital punishment. In a call for action directed at President Biden, he urged clemency and advocated for abolishing what he described as an outdated form of punishment: "It’s time to abolish the death penalty, a cruel, racist and flawed punishment that has no place in our society. Urging @POTUS to grant clemency now before it’s too late."
