City University of New York (CUNY) Chancellor Félix V. Matos Rodríguez has announced a 3% increase in total enrollment at the university, marking the second consecutive year of growth. The increase, detailed during his State of the University Address, equates to nearly 15,000 additional students over two years. A significant portion of this growth is attributed to a 6% rise in community college enrollments and a 4% increase in new graduate student numbers.
"The increase in student enrollment demonstrates that the past year, often eventful and challenging, has also been a time of progress," said Chancellor Matos Rodríguez. He emphasized CUNY's commitment to expanding opportunities and improving lives while acknowledging ongoing challenges.
The address was held at New York City College of Technology, where Matos Rodríguez outlined plans for transforming the CUNY School of Medicine into an independent college within the university. This move aims to enhance its impact and streamline accreditation processes.
As part of efforts to prepare students for professional success post-graduation, CUNY will implement a campus roadmap for career success starting this spring. Supported by a $700,000 grant from the Robin Hood Foundation, this initiative includes career-infused degree maps adopted by over 100 academic departments across CUNY.
CUNY Board of Trustees Chairperson William C. Thompson Jr. opened the address with other highlights including record research funding and increased applications during the free application period which saw submissions rise by 13%. The Reconnect program has welcomed back more than 40,000 New Yorkers with college credits since its inception three years ago.
Over recent years, CUNY has secured $2.8 billion for research and other activities while completing numerous capital projects totaling $760 million in investments. Notable philanthropic contributions include $116 million from the Steven and Alexandra Cohen Foundation for workforce training at LaGuardia Community College and $75 million from the Simons Foundation for computational science initiatives.
A jazz ensemble from Queensborough Community College performed during the event as attendees celebrated CUNY's achievements and future plans.
