St. John's University has been recognized for its participation in the 2024 New York City St. Patrick’s Day Parade, receiving a third-place award from The St. Patrick’s Day Parade and Celebration Committee. The award was presented on October 29 during a meeting of affiliated parade organizations, with Daniel Sullivan, a History major and student leader of the Irish Society, accepting it on behalf of the university.
"The enthusiasm and participation of the extended St. John’s family is what made this award possible," Sullivan remarked, expressing hopes for even greater involvement in 2025.
The parade took place on March 16, featuring over 100 participants from St. John's marching along Fifth Avenue in New York City. Prior to the parade, an alumni brunch was held at Stout New York City on East 41st Street, owned by Martin Whelan '84CBA. Whelan is known for his support of university events through his establishment, which serves as the official bar of St. John’s Athletics.
Brian Browne ’93C, ’97G, Associate Vice President of University Communications and Public Affairs at St. John's University commented on organizing such events: “Coordinating any large group in a parade is like herding cats,” he said but noted that participating in the historic parade is always a rewarding experience.
Looking ahead, the next New York City St. Patrick’s Day Parade will be held on March 17, 2025.
