As part of their training to become intellectual, religious, and civic leaders, Straus Scholars engage in internships and fellowships that complement their studies at the Straus Center. YUNews interviewed Straus Scholar Jacob (Yaakov) Willner about his summer experience with the Hudson Institute in Washington D.C.

Willner shared insights from his work at the Hudson Institute’s Center for Peace and Security in the Middle East. He worked under Dr. Michael Doran, the center's director, and Zineb Riboua, the program manager. "I wrote briefs on U.S. foreign policy, particularly regarding Israel, Iran, and the broader Middle East," Willner explained. His responsibilities included researching for Hudson’s publications and preparing materials for Dr. Doran’s podcast "Israel Update," co-hosted with Gadi Taub.

One focus area was analyzing U.S. administration statements and actions concerning Israel and Iran. Willner noted this context helped him view current conflicts as part of a broader struggle involving multiple nations. He remarked on an article he worked on regarding delays in U.S. arms shipments to Israel: "This 'de-escalation' strategy pushed onto Israel effectively restrains Israel's responses to terrorist activity."

Through this internship, Willner honed his research and writing skills in policy analysis and national security. He valued feedback received during this period and emphasized learning how to follow foreign policy news using reliable sources across political spectrums under Dr. Doran's guidance.

Among his accomplishments was an article about a special U.S. government committee imposing sanctions on Israelis—an unprecedented move against an American ally according to Willner.

He also attended events discussing topics such as Ukraine's defense strategies against Putin's invasion and deterring Chinese influence in Taiwan Strait issues. A notable event was Speaker Johnson's address on American national security at Hudson.

Reflecting on his experience as a Straus Scholar, Willner expressed gratitude towards the Straus Center for its support: "Their guidance—both in fellowship advice and logistical support—was invaluable." The education received shaped his perspective on U.S.-Israel relations.

Highlighting the importance of such work, especially since October 7th when Jewish people became central to global attention, Willner stated: "It is crucial for more Jews to get involved in these political activities to ensure that our perspectives and priorities are represented."
