When Wade Warden transitioned from his role as a Navy SEAL crisis response operator to a student in NYU Law's Master of Science in Cybersecurity Risk and Strategy (MS CRS) program, he continued to focus on crisis management, now applied to cybersecurity threats. Warden is part of a cohort that includes 21 veterans pursuing the MS CRS degree at NYU Law. He emphasizes the increasing risk of personal information exposure and its potential misuse.
Warden stated, “I think the most challenging cybersecurity threat that anyone should be aware of is the greater and greater amount of personal information, or PII, that is being exposed to the world.” He highlighted how such data could be exploited by various entities due to insufficient investment in cyber programs.
Randal Milch, faculty director of the MS CRS program and NYU’s Center for Cybersecurity, noted the value veterans bring to discussions on cybersecurity policy: “Veterans bring hard-earned practical experience—usually gained in stressful situations—and a can-do approach.”
Erin O’Brien, executive director of NYU Law’s Institute for Executive Education, discussed veterans' roles in addressing AI-related cybersecurity risks: “Members of the military are uniquely positioned to lead in an era when AI is reshaping the digital landscape."
NYU Law participates in the Yellow Ribbon scholarship program, offering unlimited matching for eligible veterans. Tyler Hornbeck, an MS CRS student and former US Army cyber operations specialist, praised NYU's support for veterans through this initiative.
AnnMarie Saran, another veteran and current MS CRS student at Accenture, was attracted by the program's combination of legal, strategic, and technical perspectives. She said this holistic approach aligns with her career path involving business strategy and technology.
The program includes three semesters focusing on cybersecurity governance and policy, risk management, leadership strategy, and culminates with an Integrative Cybersecurity Management capstone project. Swain Sulker emphasized each course's focus on current legal landscapes within specific business sectors.
Mark Blomquist highlighted future developments in digital security law: “The legal system will catch up by streamlining cyber security and privacy laws and regulations."
