The City University of New York (CUNY) is marking National Community College Month by acknowledging 33 of its community college students who have reached the semifinals for the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation's Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship. The scholarship is aimed at community college students planning to continue their education at a four-year institution. Recipients stand to receive up to $55,000 annually for two to three years, in addition to guidance from personal advisors.
The Univiersity is hosting over 20 events to showcase the advantages of two-year colleges. These include campus tours, information sessions, and open houses, with details accessible on the CUNY Undergraduate Admissions Events website.
This month-long celebration acknowledges the role two-year colleges play, both nationally and for the nearly 60,000 students at CUNY's seven community colleges. CUNY Chancellor Félix V. Matos Rodríguez emphasized the support community colleges offer, stating, "Our community colleges serve as incredible anchors that support thousands of New Yorkers each year as they aim to transform their lives and the lives of their families.”
Included among this year's semifinalists are:
- Marco Álvarez from Hostos Community College, who recently won first place at the Eastern Sociological Society Undergraduate Poster Session.
- Luis Perez-Gomez from Bronx Community College, who participated in the CUNY-India Pollution Study.
- Liam Lotz from Kingsborough Community College, who is active in the Phi Theta Kappa Honors Society.
The Borough of Manhattan Community College leads nationally with 13 semifinalists.
Each April, the distinctiveness of community colleges is honored, and CUNY takes pride in celebrating the semifinalists, whom Chancellor Matos Rodríguez describes as "the very best of our University."
CUNY, the nation's largest urban public university, serves a pivotal role in New York City as a provider of affordable education, offering nearly 240,000 undergraduate and graduate students the means to enhance their social mobility. The University's extensive influence is bolstered by a strong presence in the city, as over 80 percent of graduates continue to live and work in New York, enriching the community across various sectors.
