Laquay Wollaston, an international student from Kingston, Jamaica, has made significant strides since she began her academic journey at St. John's University in Queens, New York. Initially shy and apprehensive about meeting new people, Laquay quickly found her footing as a dedicated undergraduate.

“After taking that first step, I realized it wasn’t as daunting as I’d imagined,” Laquay said. She emphasized the importance of initiative in college life, stating, “There truly is a place for everyone at St. John’s, and you can have an incredible college experience if you take the initiative."

Laquay's interest in economics has guided her educational path. She plans to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics from The Peter J. Tobin College of Business by May 2026. Her aspirations include working with the government to help people make informed economic decisions and contribute to national growth.

She credits St. John's University for preparing her well through various events and guest speaker sessions. A notable experience was attending a panel discussion featuring economists from diverse fields: “They shared their career paths and how they utilized their degrees,” she noted.

The St. Vincent de Paul Scholarship has been pivotal in enabling Laquay to continue her studies at the university. "Without this scholarship, attending St. John’s would not have been possible for me," she acknowledged.

Beyond academics, Laquay is actively involved in campus life. She mentors fellow students through programs like R.I.S.E Network and Project AIM and serves as an Orientation Leader welcoming new students to the community. Additionally, she holds an Events Chair position with the Caribbean Student Association and participates in the Economics and Finance Club.

Her volunteer work includes activities such as supporting food pantries and making cards for hospitalized children. “I believe these acts of service are preparing me for the real world,” Laquay said.

Laquay also finds solace on campus despite being a commuter student: “Sometimes all we need is a peaceful moment,” she said, appreciating places like the Great Lawn or enjoying views from D’Angelo Center.
