October at St. John’s University is marked by special events, celebrating both new students and alumni who have maintained a strong connection with their alma mater. On October 19, the Alumni Convocation took place in St. Thomas More Church on the Queens, NY campus, honoring 13 distinguished alumni for their successful lives and careers aligned with Vincentian values.
Christian P. Vaupel, Ed.D., Senior Vice President for Advancement, opened the ceremony stating, “As we gather together today, we remember the positive impact St. John’s has had on our lives, both personally and professionally.” He emphasized that the event provides an opportunity for the University to express gratitude towards its alumni.
Rev. Brian J. Shanley, O.P., President of St. John’s University, shared his thoughts during his opening remarks about teaching Ethics at the institution. Fr. Shanley referenced Aristotle's inquiry into what constitutes a good life and highlighted virtue as a core component of character development.
“Virtues are settled dispositions to act well that you learn and hone, and practice for your entire life,” Fr. Shanley stated. He expressed admiration for the honorees’ narratives of success rooted in their education at St. John’s.
Among this year’s honorees were recipients of various prestigious awards including Outstanding Alumni Achievement Medals and University Lifetime Achievement Awards.
Ms. Fiorelli, a retired educator from the New York City Department of Education, reflected on her experiences at St. John’s saying, “The academic setting teaches that success and personal happiness need to be earned.” Mr. Donnellan from AARP added that his career was influenced by Vincentian values learned during his time at the university.
