A group of St. John's University alumni recently convened at the National Football League (NFL) headquarters in Manhattan to share insights and career advice with more than 40 students from their alma mater. This event occurred shortly after the NFL kicked off its 2024–25 season.
David P. Hedlund, Ph.D., Professor and Chairperson of the Division of Sport Management at St. John's University, highlighted the significance of such events for students aspiring to work in sports. "As New York City’s sport university, St. John’s University alumni hold leadership roles across all levels of sport in the region, including in the National Football League," he stated.
Michael Minnella '15CPS, Senior Director of Business Development for the NFL, credited his academic background as a Sport Management major for his career success. He emphasized how internships and networking were pivotal in securing his current role.
Ken Fiore ’90SVC, Vice President of Player Personnel at the NFL, who has been with the league for over three decades, shared his thoughts on essential qualities employers seek in candidates. The importance of workplace culture was echoed by Mr. Minnella: "It’s better who you work for than where you work," he said, emphasizing that a supportive environment can significantly enhance performance.
The event welcomed participants from all six schools and colleges within St. John's University, although most attendees hailed from The Lesley H. and William L. Collins College of Professional Studies. Jack Sargente, a business major from The Peter J. Tobin College of Business, expressed newfound insights gained from industry professionals: "There are a lot of different avenues to take in this business."
Jayden Canton, pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Business Analytics degree, spoke about strategies for job interviews: "Doing your research when you are interviewing for a job and knowing all the business aspects going into the process can give you an edge."
Meghan Cannella Carroll ’07L, Vice President of Labor Policy and Health for the NFL and an alumna of St. John’s School of Law, emphasized the enduring community bonds among alumni: “St. John’s is a family-oriented school,” she remarked.
