The City University of New York (CUNY) announced the appointment of Executive Vice Chancellor and University Provost Wendy Hensel as the next President of the University of Hawai’i system. This transition comes at a significant time, with CUNY navigating its strategic roadmap titled "CUNY Lifting New York," which extends until 2030.
Chancellor Matos Rodríguez expressed his congratulations to Provost Hensel, acknowledging her contributions during her tenure at CUNY. “We want to congratulate Executive Vice Chancellor and University Provost Wendy Hensel on her appointment as the next President of the University of Hawai’i system,” said Rodríguez.
During her time at CUNY, Provost Hensel played a pivotal role in several initiatives. She led a reorganization within the Office of Academic Affairs and contributed significantly to areas critical to the Strategic Roadmap. These efforts aimed at transforming CUNY into a leading student-centered university system by enhancing transfer processes, addressing equity and achievement gaps, and promoting student success through systematic strategies.
Provost Hensel also focused on inclusivity by developing a university-wide accessibility policy for students with disabilities. Her work included integrating artificial intelligence into CUNY's curriculum, aligning with modern educational advancements.
Chancellor Rodríguez further noted that Provost Hensel would complete her service by the end of this year. He added, “I want to thank Wendy for her service to CUNY and our students.” An announcement regarding interim leadership for the Office of Academic Affairs is expected soon.
The Board of Regents at the University of Hawai’i was commended by Chancellor Rodríguez for selecting an educator with Hensel's expertise. He remarked on her vision and skill as valuable assets for their institution.
