St. John’s University’s Italian Cultural Center (ICC) offers scholarships that enable students to study abroad at the University’s Rome, Italy, campus and experience Italian culture and everyday life. This year, two students from The School of Education were selected as scholarship recipients.
Gianna Ferriso, a sophomore Childhood Education major, expressed her admiration for Italy, saying, "Italy is historic, yet futuristic, serene, yet lively." She shared her excitement about being selected for the scholarship, stating, "I am so excited, proud, and grateful to be one of this year’s scholarship award winners." Ferriso highlighted that her dream of visiting her family's homeland was coming true through this opportunity.
Another scholarship recipient, Gianna Fricano, also a sophomore Childhood Education major, shared her enthusiasm for studying abroad in Italy, mentioning, "It has been my lifelong dream to travel to Italy, and I am diving into this new environment and creating great memories." Fricano emphasized the importance of building connections with people from different backgrounds, stating, "A next-door neighbor or the person across from you can become a new friend if you start a conversation with them."
Fricano described her immersive experience in Italy, saying, "I am constantly meeting new people and creating new relationships, which has been one of my favorite experiences." She appreciated the welcoming gestures of locals, noting, "These kind gestures have made me feel very welcome and comfortable." Fricano now considers Rome and the campus her new home, reflecting the deep impact of her time spent studying abroad.
Both Ferriso and Fricano are actively engaged in teaching roles during their scholarship experience. Fricano, teaching at Pistelli Elementary School, highlighted the importance of creating engaging activities and incorporating art into lessons to facilitate meaningful connections and learning opportunities for students. Ferriso, teaching English at a Roman primary school, expressed gratitude for the ICC scholarship, which has allowed her to immerse herself in the Italian culture and form lasting connections with locals.
In conclusion, the ICC scholarship has provided Ferriso and Fricano with a transformative and unforgettable Italian experience, shaping their personal and professional growth while creating lasting memories and friendships.
