On April 9, 2024, St. John’s Law students showcased their dedication to public interest work by participating in the Spring Break Service Program, where they volunteered with various legal organizations to assist those in need.
Lana Boiko-Kasyanchuk, a participant in the program, emphasized the value of the experience, stating, "It not only broadens horizons, but also deepens empathy and understanding of human struggles." This sentiment was echoed by Jeanne Ortiz-Ortiz, the Public Interest Center Director, who highlighted the importance of exposing students to the challenges faced by individuals with limited legal support.
Sidney Balaban ‘24 shared a touching moment from his time at the New York Legal Assistance Group, where he felt a deep connection with a litigant through a handwritten complaint, emphasizing the empathetic engagement required in the practice of law.
The impact of the program extended beyond New York City, as Aylin Castillo ‘24LL.M. and Kipp Garrett ‘25 traveled to Kansas City for placements with legal organizations. Castillo expressed gratitude for the inspiring legal team she worked with, while Garrett reflected on the diverse backgrounds of those he encountered, underscoring the importance of kindness and sharing blessings.
Ortiz-Ortiz revealed that the Federal Defender Office in Kansas City specifically sought St. John’s Law students for their diverse backgrounds, recognizing the value of a range of experiences in serving clients effectively.
In conclusion, Castillo acknowledged the support of St. John’s Law alumni in funding the program, emphasizing the role of students in shaping the future of the legal profession. She stated, "Students represent our future attorneys, judges, public defenders, prosecutors, and more. So, with the help of alumni, we can promote social justice and serve the public good."
