Alicia Graf Mack, the artistic director of the Dance Division, has revealed the lineup for the upcoming "Spring Dances" event, scheduled to take place from March 27 to March 30. The event promises to showcase the boundless possibilities of contemporary dance through the works of world-class choreographers.
Among the featured choreographers, Alicia Graf Mack highlights, "Kyle Abraham, Bobbi Jene Smith (’06, dance), Or Schraiber, and Shen Wei— are world-class artists whose unique voices have left an indelible mark on the global dance landscape."
Describing the contributions of the choreographers, Mack mentions, "Abraham, known for his seamless blend of contemporary dance forms, presents Studies on a Farewell, which he created on his company, A.I.M. by Kyle Abraham, in 2019." She adds that the piece includes music by Nico Muhly (MM ’02, composition), Beethoven, and Bach.
Regarding the works of Smith and Schraiber, Mack notes, "Smith and Schraiber, each acclaimed for their fearless and visceral approach to dance, bring a theatrical piece that pushes the boundaries of physical and emotional expression." The piece, titled Fugue in Crimson, is set to music composed and arranged by Yonatan Daskal and includes music by Bach, Barbara, and Bizet.
The article also highlights the inclusion of Shen Wei's innovative choreography, with Mack stating, "Lastly, we feature Shen Wei, whose innovative choreographic language merges Eastern and Western traditions." Shen Wei's signature work, Map (2005), will be presented with live music by Steve Reich (’61, composition) for the first time in the work’s history.
As the event unfolds, the audience is invited to witness the talent of the young Juilliard dancers and musicians as they come together on the stage of the Peter Jay Sharp Theater to immerse themselves in the richness of contemporary dance.
