Dean Michael A. Simons and the entire St. John's Law community are mourning the passing of Joseph M. Mattone, Sr., a prominent figure known for his strong work ethic, New York City street smarts, and keen business acumen.
Joseph M. Mattone, Sr., a Brooklyn-born grandchild of Italian immigrants, was remembered for his dedication to education and philanthropy. He was the first college graduate in his family, earning his St. John's Law degree and building a reputation as a real estate expert in Brooklyn. His professional journey led him to establish the Mattone Group, LLC, a successful development and construction company managing properties across multiple states.
Throughout his career, Joe never forgot his roots and the importance of giving back. He generously supported St. John's University, where he was a founding member of the Board of Governors and later a trustee emeritus. His contributions to the university included the establishment of the Mattone Family Institute for Real Estate Law, which has since helped aspiring real estate attorneys succeed in the field.
Recognized for his industry leadership, commitment to education, and service to the community, Joe instilled these values in his family, with nine members of the Mattone family receiving St. John's Law degrees. His son, Michael X. Mattone '91, continues his father's legacy by serving as a University Trustee and supporting the Law School's Denise '90 and Michael '91 Mattone Center for Law and Religion.
Today, Joe's impact is felt not only at St. John's Law but also in the wider legal and business communities. His generosity and dedication to education have left a lasting legacy that will be remembered for years to come. The St. John's Law community extends its deepest sympathies to the Mattone family, honoring the life and contributions of Joseph M. Mattone, Sr. May he rest in peace.
