The pledge was signed by no teachers on Oct. 26, the day before. It now has 94 pledges from Brooklyn teachers.
They’re one of the thousands of US teachers pledging to continue educating students about the controversial Critical Race Theory, which explains racism is embedded in US culture and politics.
Comments from Brooklyn teachers included, "Choosing to teach the truth is choosing antiracism. We can't continue to pretend that police kill more black people and more of us are incarcerated because criminality is in our DNA. We can't understand policing without knowing about slave patrollers, black codes and jim crow. If we are to change America into the antiracist society it could be, we need to begin exposing the truth wherever we find it hidden" and "We cannot move forward with lies or denial about the past".
Though the concept was first suggested in the late 70’s, it has recently exploded as a contentious issue between the American right and left in the last two years.
Many who signed the pledge are defying state bans on the teachings. Arizona, Idaho, Iowa, New Hampshire, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas have passed legislation banning discussions about the US being inherently racist.
Other states, such as Montana and South Dakota, have denounced the teachings without passing specific legislation.
In an interview with The Washington Free Beacon', Ashley Varner of the Freedom Foundation accused the Zinn Education Project of providing “left-leaning propaganda to teachers.”

As a former public school dance teacher, I was told bu classroom teachers...if it’s not on the test, the teachers don’t teach it. Additionally, subject teachers were so overwhelmed with teaching to the test that there was never any time to even supplement their classrooms. Lesson plans; letters home; books and reading materials are checked by administration and YouTube bans certain video for schools. If schools are to move forward, parents and teachers need to work with their administrations and get the conversation started about how to teach people’s history. |
