Assemblyman Alec Brook-Krasny, representing Coney Island and Bay Ridge, has called for strengthened involuntary commitment laws following a violent incident in Brooklyn. During a press conference alongside colleagues from the state Assembly and Senate, Brook-Krasny addressed the attack, in which four young girls were stabbed by their uncle, who had a known history of mental illness. This tragic event has underscored the need for more robust laws for individuals dealing with severe mental health issues.

“The incident that took place in our community earlier this week is a clear signal that we are not handling mental health correctly in our city,” Brook-Krasny stated. He emphasized the need for preventive action to protect the public and ensure that individuals with mental health challenges receive the care they need. Brook-Krasny further remarked, “We cannot afford to sit by and wait for the next tragedy to happen."

He pledged to collaborate with his colleagues in the state Assembly and Senate to strengthen laws related to involuntary commitment. The goal, according to Brook-Krasny, is to provide law enforcement officers and first responders with the tools and training needed to manage such situations effectively.
