As part of their education in leadership roles, Straus Scholars engage in internships to enhance their understanding related to Straus Center studies. One such scholar, Shana Schwartz, a biology student at Stern College for Women, is currently involved in research at Ematai, an initiative directed by Rabbi Dr. Shlomo Brody.
Schwartz, originally from Hillside, New Jersey, explains her motivation to choose Stern College and the Straus Center, stating, "This blend is especially meaningful as I explore how Torah values intersect with contemporary issues, particularly in the field of medicine." She aims to merge her interest in medicine with Jewish bioethics, highlighting the importance of understanding "moral and halakhic principles".
Since last summer, Shana has interned at Ematai, an organization assisting Jewish families with medical dilemmas through guidance based on the Torah. Rabbi Dr. Brody, who is in the process of authoring a book on Jewish medical ethics, leads the organization with a vision of providing comprehensive guidance rooted in Jewish values. Through her role, Schwartz has been helping to make Jewish bioethics more accessible by refining source materials for readers.
Schwartz’s work involves studying diverse texts, from Talmudic writings to medieval rabbinic literature, coupled with contemporary discussions. She found the interactions of halakha with broader areas such as the laws of Shabbat to be insightful. Her studies have delved into the philosophical dimensions of Jewish medical ethics, where conflicts between tradition and modern scientific discoveries arise.
When reflecting on her experience, Shana noted significant academic growth: "As my research progressed, I deepened my understanding of halakhic logic and reasoning." She also realized the historical influences on medical halakha and recognized the significant medical knowledge possessed by many rabbis.
Shana credits the Straus Center for shaping her intellectual journey, recounting a pivotal lecture by Rabbi Brody that prompted her exploration of these ideas in the medical field. The center's focus on critical reading and discussing complex issues proved invaluable during her internship at Ematai.
Bioethical issues remain a significant point of political and ethical debates, contends Schwartz. Her research highlighted that "bioethical decisions reflect the decisor’s overall perception of life and human dignity," making modifications in bioethical discussions crucial for fostering a society valuing human dignity.
