Juilliard's Preparatory Division is advancing the future of classical music by commissioning over 50 new works in recent years. This initiative aims to expand the classical repertoire, reflecting diverse voices and offering young musicians opportunities to engage with contemporary compositions.
The Kayden Music Commissioning Program at Pre-College, launched last year, supports the premiere of 8 to 10 new works annually. These pieces result from collaboration between composers and faculty, challenging students both technically and artistically. The commissioned works vary in form—ranging from orchestral to solo performances—and are designed to push young musicians beyond traditional boundaries.
Faculty members Amy Barston and Cathy Cho will premiere Curtis Stewart’s "Invention No. 2: Work Songs" on April 5 at the Pre-College Faculty Recital. This piece is one of three Kayden Commissions featured in the program. Barston noted that Stewart's style brings innovation, combining soulful lyrical passages with complex rhythms and audience interaction. She remarked, “Curtis delivered way beyond our expectations.”
Juilliard's MAP students also benefit from this commitment to shaping classical music's future. In May, the MAP String Ensemble will debut a new work by composer Conni Ellisor. Catherine Birke, MAP’s music director, emphasized that Ellisor’s piece addresses social justice issues while enhancing students' technique and improvisation skills.
The Kayden Music Commissioning Program is supported by Juilliard alum Jerold S. Kayden and his wife Stephanie through an endowed fund aimed at fostering a more inclusive classical music world.
