New York orthopaedic surgeon Michael L. Parks, MD, FAAOS, has been appointed as the second vice president of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) Board of Directors. This appointment marks the beginning of a four-year term during which Dr. Parks is expected to serve as president of AAOS in 2027. He will assume his new role following the AAOS 2025 Annual Meeting in San Diego.
“As I embark on this four-year term, my priority is to champion and listen to our members, ensuring they have the resources, education and support necessary to navigate the evolving healthcare landscape,” stated Dr. Parks. “Alongside my fellow AAOS Board members, I am committed to improving musculoskeletal health through collaboration, innovation and patient focus. I am honored to serve in this role and to advance AAOS’ mission of serving our profession to provide the highest quality musculoskeletal care.”
Dr. Parks has contributed significantly as a physician, advocate, and mentor within the AAOS. His past roles include treasurer, BOD member-at-large, chair of various committees such as Resolutions and Finance Committees, and a member of several boards and cabinets within AAOS. He was recognized with the Diversity Award in 2019 and Achievement Award in 2012.
A specialist in arthritis surgical treatment for adults, Dr. Parks is noted for his expertise in hip and knee reconstructive procedures. His research focuses on joint replacement surgery with an emphasis on reducing health disparities influenced by socio-economic factors. His work has been featured in notable publications like New York magazine and The New York Times Magazine.
Beyond his involvement with AAOS, Dr. Parks is a past president of both the Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation and the New York State Society of Orthopaedic Surgeons. He has served on the board of directors for the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons and participated actively in Movement is Life Caucus.
Dr. Parks completed his undergraduate studies at Duke University before earning his medical degree from the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston where he received significant recognition for his academic achievements. His post-graduate training includes an internship at Duke University Medical Center followed by further specialization at Hospital for Special Surgery in New York.
