The application process for Brooklyn's 18 community boards is now open, as announced by Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso. Residents of New York City aged 16 and older can apply to join these local government bodies until February 19, 2024. Community boards address issues such as land use, liquor licenses, and transportation projects.
"Community boards give New Yorkers a unique opportunity to have a say in matters that impact their communities," said Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso. He emphasized the importance of diversity within the boards, stating, "In order for community boards to achieve their full potential, they must be as diverse as the neighborhoods they represent – and here in Brooklyn, my administration is laser-focused on ensuring that community boards are representative and well-resourced."
Each board consists of up to 50 volunteers who live or work in the area. The role of a Brooklyn Borough President includes overseeing these boards. However, changes to the City Charter and historical under-resourcing have challenged their ability to fulfill responsibilities effectively.
Reynoso's vision aims for fully funded and diverse community boards. His administration has redirected resources toward training and supporting these entities while advocating for necessary resources from city agencies.
