CUNY Chancellor Félix V. Matos Rodríguez has expressed his condolences following the death of Hazel N. Dukes, a prominent figure in civil rights and equal opportunity advocacy in New York. "For more than half a century, Hazel N. Dukes was one of New York’s most potent forces for civil rights and equal opportunity," stated Chancellor Matos Rodríguez.

Ms. Dukes was recognized as a long-time leader of the NAACP in New York, where she championed issues such as voting rights, economic development, fair housing, quality health care, and education for all. Her efforts aligned closely with CUNY's mission to promote social equity. She pursued post-graduate studies at Queens College and received two honorary doctorates from the University. Ms. Dukes was also an active presence on CUNY campuses as both a mentor and role model.

Her advocacy work began in the 1960s when she tackled housing discrimination and pushed for early childhood education initiatives on Long Island. She played a key role in establishing the federal Head Start program, which marked the start of her enduring commitment to educational opportunities—a commitment that fostered a strong connection with the CUNY community. In recognition of her contributions, she was awarded honorary doctorate degrees from Medgar Evers College and the CUNY School of Law.

"Ms. Dukes never stopped fighting for equality and opportunity in our state," added Chancellor Matos Rodríguez. "We mark her passing with sadness as we celebrate her inspiring life and enduring legacy."
