The Maurice R. Greenberg School of Risk Management, Insurance and Actuarial Science (GSRM) at St. John's University hosted its 29th annual Insurance Leader of the Year Award Dinner on February 26 in New York City. The event raised $3,117,110 to support student scholarships and academic programs.
M. Steven DeCarlo, Executive Chair of Amwins, was honored as the 2024 Insurance Leader of the Year. "I am truly honored to be recognized as the Insurance Leader of the Year," said Mr. DeCarlo.
Mr. DeCarlo highlighted the role of Excess & Surplus lines (E&S) Insurance within the industry and announced a new initiative: “A group of us have banded together to establish a special gift to the School—the Amwins Industry Leadership Endowment.” He also revealed that contributions to this endowment reached $608,500 during the evening.
Amwins is headquartered in Charlotte, NC, providing a range of insurance products and services globally.
Rev. Brian J. Shanley, O.P., President of St. John’s University, praised GSRM as "one of the crown jewels" and expressed gratitude for industry support: “We thank the industry for internships, employment opportunities...and for engaging with our students.”
Emma Pepe, a Master’s student in Enterprise Risk Management at GSRM, spoke about her career shift from teaching to insurance: “Witnessing the impact that insurance can have on someone’s life by offering them a sense of security and stability is why I was inspired to pivot my career toward insurance.”
George Russon, another graduate student in Enterprise Risk Management who attended for the first time shared his experience: “It is great to be included in these networking events and meet professionals in the industry.”
Founded in 1901 as The College of Insurance before merging with St. John’s University in 2001, GSRM offers degrees accredited by The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business.
Maciek Nowak, Ph.D., Dean at The Peter J. Tobin College of Business remarked on GSRM's ongoing engagement with industry leaders: “Students gain valuable industry insights...and enhance their opportunities and career advancement.”
The next annual dinner is set for January 21, 2026.
