Straus Scholar Adina Feldman, a psychology major at Yeshiva University, has shared her experiences working as an intern in Israel following the events of October 7th. Feldman’s internship involved both academic research and practical support for Israeli families dealing with psychological challenges.

During her time in Israel, Feldman worked with Micki Lavin-Pell, a trauma and relationship therapist based in Jerusalem. Her role involved conducting interviews to assess whether group therapy would benefit parents of active-duty soldiers. These interactions provided Feldman with valuable insights into the difficulties faced by families sending their children to war.

Returning to New York for her junior year, Feldman continued her work remotely as a research intern. She contributed to Lavin-Pell's upcoming book on the impact of October 7th on relationships by developing interview questions and surveys for partners of reserve soldiers. Her research compared the effects of prolonged combat on relationships in Israel with similar situations in other countries.

Feldman's experience emphasized the importance of listening and providing a safe space for individuals to express their emotions. She noted that each interview offered unique perspectives on how people process similar experiences differently.

Her studies at Yeshiva University, particularly through the Straus Center, have been instrumental in shaping her approach to this work. Literature classes enhanced her empathy, history courses provided insight into human behavior, and reading groups improved her communication skills.

Feldman expressed gratitude to the Straus Center for facilitating such transformative experiences that blend academic learning with practical application. The internship reinforced her passion for psychology and equipped her with tools for her future career.
