In the fall of 2024, a Global Online Learning Exchange (GOLE) project was implemented in a Principles of Financial Accounting course through a collaboration between Dr. Bachar Moughayt, an Assistant Professor of Management at Université Catholique de l'Ouest in Angers, France, and an educator from St. John’s University. This initiative aimed to connect undergraduate students from both institutions to explore financial accounting, international marketing, and corporate social responsibility.

The project focused on examining European companies' sustainability efforts within the framework of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Students worked in cross-cultural teams to compare and analyze cultural differences in sustainability practices between the United States and Europe. They produced comprehensive reports reflecting their collaborative insights.

To foster community and rapport among participants, the project began with a virtual icebreaker where students shared objects of personal cultural significance. This activity set the tone for navigating cultural differences, communication styles, and time zone challenges throughout the project. Weekly team journals documented progress and highlighted students' ability to overcome barriers to work effectively as global teams.

The collaboration with Dr. Moughayt was described as "a truly wonderful experience" due to his expertise in international business education and passion for creating dynamic learning environments. The partnership added an exciting dimension to teaching by bridging cultures through education.

This initiative aligns with St. John’s University's mission to promote global engagement and cross-cultural understanding. The opportunity is seen as having a lasting impact on students' academic and professional journeys.

"I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to collaborate with Dr. Moughayt," said one participant about this vibrant international learning environment.
