New York University’s Gallatin School of Individualized Study is set to co-host a symposium titled "Romancing the Machine/Dancing at the Edge of Intelligence" on March 1 and 2. The event will explore the intersection of dance and artificial intelligence through live performances, film screenings, panel discussions, and workshops.
The symposium will feature leading figures in choreography, dance, composition, design, AI art, and software engineering. Discussions will cover topics such as early precursors of dance technology, ethics in technology, and the preservation of memory and mythology.
Julie Malnig, an NYU Gallatin professor and co-organizer of the event, stated: "Dance is the most ephemeral of the arts. What might the technologies of robotics, motion capture, virtual, mixed, and augmented reality do to extend the life of dance beyond the stage? Our symposium brings together some of the most cutting-edge artists and practitioners to think through this question and help us reimagine the future possibilities of the dancing body."
The event is supported by several NYU departments including Gallatin itself, along with sponsorship from Onassis ONX and Jacob’s Pillow.
Scheduled for March 1-2 from 9:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., it will take place at 370 Jay Street in Brooklyn. For further details or inquiries about participation, Julie Malnig can be contacted via email.
