Rock G. Positano, DPM, MSc, MPH, DSc, the director of Non-Surgical Foot and Ankle Services at HSS, has issued a cautionary note regarding transparent footwear in a recent Vogue interview.
"The foot by itself [without a sock] in a shoe, plastic or not, provides a perfect milieu for fungal growth," explained Dr. Positano. "It is moist, dark and there is heat. The combination of those three things make a foot inside a shoe a dangerous place."
Dr. Positano's remarks highlight potential health concerns associated with wearing shoes that do not allow proper ventilation.
