The Senator Joseph Lieberman-Mitzner Center for Public Service and Advocacy continued its "In Dialogue" series on January 28, 2025, featuring Jonathan Greenspun. Greenspun, a Yeshiva University graduate and managing director of Mercury, engaged in an open discussion with the inaugural cohort of the Senator Joseph Lieberman-Mitzner Scholars. The session was moderated by Scholar Benjamin Eidlisz.
During the event, Greenspun explained the operations of his firm and distinguished between public affairs and public relations. He shared insights from his career in political campaigns and reminisced about his time as a student at Yeshiva University in the early 1990s. His internship with Rudy Giuliani during Giuliani's mayoral campaign sparked his interest in politics. Greenspun later worked for various state and city officials, including Mayor Bill de Blasio and Mayor Michael Bloomberg, before moving to the private sector.
Greenspun addressed the issue of professional paralysis among young students who hesitate to take their first steps due to waiting for perfect opportunities. He emphasized taking proactive steps rather than waiting for ideal circumstances. He encouraged scholars to engage in public service during their college years to gain skills and connections necessary for future endeavors.
Reflecting on Senator Joseph Lieberman, Greenspun described him as a "hero" and an "inspiration on how to be a Jew in politics." He praised Lieberman as the "gold standard for anyone who wants to aspire in public service," highlighting the importance of community contribution as fundamental to leading a successful life. "Do not forget that our mission in life is to give back," he advised.
The event concluded with Greenspun answering questions from scholars on topics such as Jewish community politics, running for office, and differences between local and national politics.
Previous speakers in the "In Dialogue" series include Hon. Clarine Nardi Riddle, former Attorney General of Connecticut, and Matthew Incantalupo, assistant professor of political science at Yeshiva University.
