Erin Stiebel's journey from a warm upbringing in Silver Spring, Maryland, to a career in Jewish education has been shaped by her experiences and the community around her. Born in Jacksonville, Florida, she spent her early years as the daughter of a U.S. Navy captain. Her family moved to Silver Spring when she was four, where they embraced the Orthodox community and lifestyle.
Stiebel credits her home life for instilling warmth and openness. Her parents frequently hosted guests at their Shabbat table, fostering lively discussions. She traveled to Poland, Ukraine, and Israel through NCSY JOLT, which deepened her Jewish identity. "I was very involved in NCSY throughout high school," she says.
Her decision to attend Stern College for Women came after realizing it was the best option for her religious growth during high school at Berman Hebrew Academy. At Stern College, she pursued Judaic studies and took on leadership roles. "YU gave me so many opportunities to learn my kochos [strengths] and build connections," she says.
Stiebel became an NCSY adviser and later director of NCSY GIVE in 2009. She also began teaching at SAR Academy while studying at Azrieli Graduate School of Jewish Education and Administration for a master's degree in Jewish education.
After graduating from Azrieli, Stiebel moved to Detroit with her husband David and continued working with NCSY GIVE. "Informal education is where the magic happens," she notes.
Now living in Southfield, Michigan, Stiebel balances multiple roles as an educator for Partners Detroit and running 4G Detroit while preparing for another summer program with NCSY GIVE. Despite her professional achievements, she values being a mom to five children most.
Reflecting on her journey, Stiebel acknowledges YU's role in providing confidence and tools for success: "The YU community made an everlasting impact on me." As she continues inspiring others through Torah values and dedication to future generations, Stiebel recently completed the Core MMC Training Program as a Mashpia/Mentor/Counselor.
"There’s no greater job than helping people tap into their potential," concludes Stiebel.
