The exhibition "Taking Up Space" showcases artwork by teenagers from across the United States who have achieved the highest national recognition in the 2024 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. These awards include the Gold and Silver Portfolio Award, The Herblock Award for Editorial Cartoon, the New York Life Award, and the Gold Medal Award. Organized by the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers, the Scholastic Awards are recognized as the longest-running and most prestigious program honoring creative teens in America.

Established in 1923, these awards have brought young people's work to both regional and national audiences. Notable former recipients of these awards include artists Andy Warhol, Cy Twombly, Kay WalkingStick, and John Baldessari—all of whom are represented in The Met collection—as well as writers Stephen King, Amanda Gorman, and Joyce Carol Oates.

The artworks featured in this exhibition were selected through a detailed adjudication process that focused on originality, skill, and personal voice or vision. This collection represents young artists who have been motivated to express their perspectives on the world around them. They pose questions such as: "Can you see how I see? Can you feel how I feel?"

The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards are presented by the nonprofit organization Alliance for Young Artists & Writers and are supported by numerous sponsors including Scholastic Inc., The Destina Foundation, New York Life Foundation, BLICK Art Materials, The Herb Block Foundation, Public Funds from New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with City Council among others. Additionally, support for the National Student Poets Program is provided by organizations such as Institute of Museum and Library Services and Academy of American Poets.
