In the Black Box Theatre at Pless Hall, students are engaging in a course titled "Physical Theatre & Improvisation," led by Clinical Professor Nan Smithner. This course is designed for Educational Theatre students and aims to teach improvisation through vocal and movement techniques.

Students in this class are encouraged to explore communication using their entire bodies. Activities include jumping, miming, and groaning—an array of sounds and gestures that convey various intentions or ideas.

Professor Smithner explains her teaching approach: “I teach a lot through play, and improvisation is embedded in everything. I’m advocating for the whole body to be expressive.”

A recent session observed by NYU News involved students working alongside Smithner and Teaching Assistant Jordan Stewart on Action Theatre techniques.
