The Center for Ballet and the Arts at New York University (CBA) has announced its selection of nine fellows for the 2024-2025 academic year. The fellows come from diverse fields such as art history, choreography, dance education, and Black diasporic studies.
MeowMeow has been awarded the Director's Fellowship to develop a project centered on dance and its related arts. Resident Fellows include Alexander Bevilacqua, Honey Crawford, Deborah Damast, Catherine Quan Damman, and Shamel Pitts. These individuals will work on projects that aim to expand perspectives on dance history and performance.
Haley Winegarden Murphree is the recipient of the CBA-Juilliard Fellowship, which supports emerging artists with resources and an enriching environment. Michele Byrd-McPhee and Mio Ishikawa have been granted the CBA-Chelsea Factory Fellowship to advance their scholarly and artistic endeavors in ballet and related fields.
The Center also welcomes three visiting scholars: Phil Chan from Final Bow for Yellowface; Virginia Johnson, former artistic director of Dance Theatre of Harlem; and Constantina Theofanopoulou from Rockefeller University.
Jennifer Homans, founder and director of CBA stated: “We are thrilled to welcome this extraordinary group of fellows to CBA and NYU this academic year. Their diverse disciplines—including theater, choreography, art history, Black diasporic studies, street and club dance, and dance education—bring a wealth of perspectives.”
Since its inception in 2014, CBA has hosted 194 fellows from various countries providing them with time, space, support for new projects while fostering collaboration among artists and scholars.
