Speaker Carl Heastie continued his statewide tour alongside Assemblymember Anna Kelles, participating in a ribbon-cutting ceremony at The Learning Farm and visiting the Greater Ithaca Activities Center (GIAC). During the event, Speaker Heastie remarked on the significance of the occasion, stating, “This ribbon cutting marks an exciting opportunity for The Learning Farm’s ability to expand their offerings to the community.”
Assemblymember Kelles expressed her appreciation for Speaker Heastie's presence, emphasizing the importance of both organizations. She noted, “I am honored to have Speaker Heastie join me today to celebrate these two incredible organizations in our community. Both the Learning Farm and GIAC provide invaluable opportunities for young people in the Ithaca community, particularly for our BIPOC young people who are far too commonly underserved and under-resourced."
The ceremony marked the opening of new cabins at The Learning Farm, enabling it to extend its services into overnight stays. This expansion was made possible by a $200,000 investment from the Assembly Majority. Additionally, they provided $450,000 for constructing a commercial kitchen to enhance teachings on sustainable food production.
Later, Speaker Heastie and Assemblymember Kelles met with GIAC Director Leslyn McBean-Clairborne. They toured GIAC's facilities and discussed efforts to provide multicultural programs. The Assembly Majority secured $750,000 for expanding GIAC's Red and White Café, which offers employment opportunities for local youth. Further funding is sought for renovating the Alex Haley pool to ensure year-round access.
Assemblymember Kelles reaffirmed her commitment to supporting these initiatives: “I will continue to work with my colleagues to ensure that both GIAC and the Learning Farm have the resources needed to expand and grow.”
