MAP makes its Alice Tully Hall debut May 4 with Norris’ piece and other works
By Susan Jackson
Marcus Norris, the third composer in residence for the Music Advancement Program (MAP), recently debuted his piece "For All That Comes Next" at Juilliard. As reported by Norris himself, the students' performance of his composition was met with enthusiasm and curiosity. Norris expressed his admiration for the young musicians, stating, "It was really inspiring hearing them play it." He further commended the students for their openness to new experiences, saying, "The students seemed so curious and excited to try new things."
Reflecting on the challenge of creating a piece for a large group of musicians, Norris shared his experience of adapting his composition to cater to the orchestra's strengths. Catherine Birke, the MAP's music director, provided feedback that encouraged Norris to enhance certain sections of the piece. Birke's suggestion to involve more trumpets in the composition led Norris to expand and enrich the orchestration. He explained, “As a young composer, you learn to do the most with the least," emphasizing the importance of maximizing the musical potential of the ensemble.
Norris highlighted the students' willingness to embrace new challenges, noting, "I loved how they weren’t averse to doing new things or uncomfortable things." The collaborative spirit and dedication displayed by the young musicians during the performance left a lasting impression on Norris. He described the experience as "amazing" and emphasized the students' hunger for exploration and growth.
The successful collaboration between Marcus Norris, Catherine Birke, and the talented musicians of the Music Advancement Program exemplifies the program's commitment to nurturing young musical talent. Norris' composition, brought to life by the enthusiastic orchestra members, marks a significant milestone in the MAP's journey towards artistic excellence.
