In the latest episode of the Brainiacs series, which offers a monthly snapshot of research at NYU, various experts discussed crucial topics related to climate research and its implications for Earth Month.

Assistant Professor Mingzhen Lu from NYU’s Department of Environmental Studies delved into the impact of urbanization on the planet, specifically focusing on waste management. Lu and colleagues utilized scaling theory to analyze waste products from over 1,000 cities worldwide, contemplating the future rise of city trash, wastewater, and emissions as urban populations continue to grow.

Meanwhile, Assistant Professor Madalina Vlasceanu from NYU’s Department of Psychology led an international team of scientists in a study aimed at bolstering global climate awareness and action. The research involved nearly 250 researchers and engaged over 59,000 participants from 63 countries to develop a tool that emphasizes effective messaging themes for climate advocacy.

Additionally, Professor Michael Rampino from NYU’s Department of Biology presented findings that shed light on lethal climate changes millions of years ago. Rampino and his fellow researchers concluded that volcanic eruptions played a significant role in climate shifts and mass extinctions over the past 260 million years. He highlighted the potential influence of astronomical cycles in the solar system and the Milky Way Galaxy on Earth's geologic processes.

The Brainiacs episode provided valuable insights into the multifaceted nature of climate research, demonstrating the diverse approaches and collaborations necessary to address pressing environmental challenges.
