Loretta Ching’andu, a first-year student in the M.S. in Digital Marketing and Media at the Katz School of Science and Health, recently had the opportunity to address the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women. Despite initial hesitations about studying in the United States, Ching’andu's journey led her to seize the chance to speak on a crucial topic at the UN event.
Ching’andu shared her motivation for joining the Katz School, stating, “I’m Christian but I’ve always wanted to learn Hebrew, so I felt like maybe this was God leading me to this moment.” Additionally, she expressed her long-standing aspiration to work for the United Nations.
At the UN event, Ching’andu discussed the challenges faced by female entrepreneurs in Zambia and advocated for their empowerment. She emphasized the importance of policies and initiatives that promote equal access to funding and resources for women-led ventures, highlighting the significance of mentorship and networking opportunities in fostering women's success.
Reflecting on the barriers young female entrepreneurs encounter in Zambia, Ching’andu addressed issues such as limited access to financial support, market opportunities, and the impact of gender stereotypes and discrimination. She underscored the need for specialized funds and financial institutions tailored to support women entrepreneurs.
Furthermore, Ching’andu emphasized the importance of engaging men as partners in efforts to achieve gender equality, stating, “the goal should be to view men not as adversaries but as partners in dismantling patriarchal structures and creating an equitable society.”
In closing, Ching’andu expressed her enthusiasm for the inclusive dialogue at the UN event, highlighting the value of diverse perspectives in advancing opportunities for women and girls. She concluded by urging for collective action to ensure that every woman and girl has the chance to thrive and succeed.
