WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Representative Ritchie Torres (NY-15) today announced he successfully helped secure $6,000,000 in federal funding through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to implement critical safety and accessibility improvements to bus facilities along Jerome Avenue – a major transportation corridor for public transit users in the Bronx.

“Last Congress, I was proud to join House Democrats in supporting the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, which continues to deliver historic and critical investments in New York and across America – and this is just the latest example,” said U.S. Rep. Ritchie Torres (NY-15). “The funding we helped secure for the Bronx will go a long way toward correcting historic disinvestments while also improving the overall public transit system for passengers, making it more accessible, safer, easier, efficient, and more convenient along Jerome Ave. Under the leadership of President Biden and his ‘Investing in America’ agenda, investing in our infrastructure isn’t a punchline – it’s providing real resultsto meet the needs of residents.”

With the funding, the New York City Department of Transportation (NYC DOT) will be able to make much needed improvements to allow passengers to board and wait for buses more safely and comfortably. Some of the improvements include curb extensions, sidewalk reconstruction, intersection upgrades, visibility improvements, and ADA upgrades.

In March 2022, Rep. Torres sent a letter to the head of the Federal Transit Administration (FTA), demonstrating his steadfast support for the Jerome Ave. project and making clear the need to improve the overall transit experience for riders who cannot use stairs to reach elevated stations.

The $6,000,000 in funding is being made available to NYC DOT through a competitive grant from FTA’s Buses and Bus Facilities program, which makes federal resources available to states and transit agencies to construct and modernize bus-related facilities. The investment is one of 130 awards totaling nearly $1.7 billion that the Biden-Harris Administration announced today to fund transit projects in 46 states and territories across the country.
