WASHINGTON, DC – On June 8, 2023, Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries released the following statement:

On June 8, 2023, Supreme Court Decision preserves an important tool in addressing our country’s voter suppression epidemic and affirms that the 1965 Voting Rights Act remains the law of the land.

The right to vote is integral to our democracy. This principle of one person, one vote and government of the people, by the people and for the people is foundational to our nation. For far too long, people of color have had their voting power diluted because extreme, right-wing lawmakers believe that illegal racial gerrymanders benefit them politically.

While today’s decision is a victory, Alabama is not the only state that has engaged in race-based gerrymandering. House Democrats will continue to fight for fair maps across the land and end the scourge of voter suppression once and for all.
