Dear Neighbor,

Our City is currently experiencing poor and unhealthy air quality levels due to smoke from wildfires in Canada. It is expected that Air Quality Index levels will remain dangerous in Brooklyn through at least Thursday.

As a result of reduced air quality, it is recommended you:

  • Limit outdoor activity and stay inside when possible. People with heart or breathing problems and children and older adults may be especially sensitive and should avoid outdoor activities altogether.
  • Wear a high-quality mask–like an N95 or KN95 if possible–when outside, especially if you are an older adult or have heart or breathing problems.
Click here to learn more and access resources about protecting yourself from wildfire smoke from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

New York City has also established a toll-free air quality hotline to help you stay informed on the air quality situation. The number is 1 (800) 535-1345.

The increase in extreme weather events–from flooding to wildfires–is a stark reminder of the drastic effects of climate change. Last Congress, Democrats passed the Inflation Reduction Act as the largest federal investment to combat the climate crisis in our nation’s history. We must work to get through this moment and continue to work toward a greener future.
