Washington, D.C. — On May 18, 2023, Congresswoman Yvette D. Clarke released the following statement regarding H.R.2494, the POLICE Act of 2023:

“Assaulting a police officer is already a crime, and this overly broad, vaguely written bill does nothing to help law enforcement or protect the rights of immigrants and their families. As drafted, this legislation would render permanent residents and other immigrants who are lawfully in the U.S. deportable without ever being charged. Extreme MAGA Republicans continue to attempt to needlessly restrict the rights of immigrants and their families, and this fundamentally unserious legislation is nothing but an affront to our values as Americans,” said Congresswoman Clarke.
