The New York Yankees have updated their Top 30 prospect rankings following the July 31 Trade Deadline, with several changes reflecting recent moves and performances within their minor league system.
General manager Brian Cashman discussed the trade talks leading up to the deadline, noting that some prospects were considered off-limits. “Like with anybody, you try to protect and stay away to the degree you can,” Cashman said. “There’s a lot of guys that we like, and unfortunately we parted with guys we like. That’s just the nature of the beast. We were trying to stay away from certain guys more than others, but we also recognize you have to give to get.”
Cashman highlighted that top prospect George Lombard Jr. was at the forefront of an “untouchables” list during negotiations. Other notable names included outfielder Spencer Jones and right-handed pitcher Cam Schlittler, both of whom drew interest from other clubs but ultimately remained in the Yankees’ system.
The updated ranking places George Lombard Jr., a shortstop ranked No. 25 on MLB’s overall prospect list, at number one for the Yankees. He is followed by right-hander Carlos Lagrange (No. 82 MLB), Cam Schlittler (No. 91 MLB), Spencer Jones (No. 92 MLB), and right-hander Bryce Cunningham rounding out the top five.
Carlos Lagrange made the biggest leap among prospects, moving from 19th in preseason to second midseason after reaching Double-A Somerset and showing improved command alongside his high-velocity fastball that has reached 102 mph.
Roderick Arias experienced a significant drop in ranking after struggling offensively at Single-A Tampa over 81 games.
Four new players joined the Top 30 following selections in this year’s draft: Dax Kilby (8th), Kaeden Kent (13th), Pico Kohn (15th), and Core Jackson (18th).
Prospects are evaluated using a standard scouting scale ranging from well below average to well above average across various skills such as hitting, power, speed, arm strength, defense, pitching repertoire, and control.
This reshuffling comes as part of broader efforts by the organization to strengthen its major league roster while maintaining depth within its farm system for future seasons.
