The New York Yankees will determine on April 27 whether designated hitter Giancarlo Stanton will be placed on the injured list, manager Aaron Boone said Sunday. Stanton has missed two consecutive games due to right calf tightness that began during Friday night’s game at Daikin Park.
The decision comes as the Yankees conclude a series against the Houston Astros and prepare for a three-game set against the Texas Rangers starting Monday. The team is currently short-handed as they await clarity on Stanton’s condition.
Boone said before Sunday’s 7-4 loss to Houston, “Not too long. I would think we’ll have a decision ahead of tomorrow one way or the other.” He added, “I know [Saturday] he felt like it was improved. I think he also feels like he got in front of it a little bit, so we’ll see how it unfolds.”
Stanton experienced discomfort while jogging from first to second base after a walk to Jazz Chisholm Jr., prompting his early exit from Friday’s game. Last season, Stanton missed 85 games but has appeared in 24 of the Yankees’ first 28 games this year, posting a .256 batting average with three home runs and 14 RBIs.
The Yankees have started their nine-game road trip with five wins out of six games and are monitoring Stanton’s recovery closely as they approach their next series.
