The New York Yankees announced on Apr. 10 that they will promote pitcher Luis Gil from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and designate right-hander Cade Winquest for assignment, according to a report from The Athletic’s Chris Kirschner.
This move is significant as it marks a roster change early in the season. Winquest, who was selected by the Yankees in the Rule 5 Draft last December, had made the Opening Day roster but has not yet appeared in a Major League Baseball game.
As a Rule 5 selection from the St. Louis Cardinals, Winquest was required to remain on the Yankees’ major league roster or be offered back to his original team. Now that he has been designated for assignment, he must clear waivers before potentially returning to St. Louis if the Cardinals choose to pay $50,000 to reacquire him.
Gil began this season with Triple-A after spending much of last year with the Yankees. In his only appearance this year at Triple-A, he allowed three runs over four and two-thirds innings and struck out six batters. Last season with New York, Gil posted a 3.32 earned run average across 57 innings and struck out 41 batters. In 2024, he won American League Rookie of the Year honors after recording a 3.50 ERA and striking out 171 hitters over more than 151 innings.
The decision reflects ongoing adjustments as teams manage their rosters through injuries and performance early in the baseball season.
