The New York Yankees matched a Major League Baseball record by hitting 14 home runs over two games, tying the mark set by the 1999 Cincinnati Reds. The Yankees achieved this during a two-game sweep of the Tampa Bay Rays in Tampa, with nine home runs in Tuesday’s 13-3 win at George M. Steinbrenner Field and five more on Wednesday, including back-to-back home runs from Giancarlo Stanton and Austin Wells in the top of the 10th inning.

The teams are linked by Aaron Boone, who is currently managing the Yankees and was a player for the Reds when they set their record. Boone hit the first home run of that stretch for Cincinnati against the Phillies at Veterans Stadium on September 4-5, 1999.

The Yankees’ recent performance marks an improvement after going through a difficult period from June 13 to August 10, where they had a record of 20 wins and 31 losses. They have since won five consecutive games and seven out of their last eight. As they approach a four-game series against Boston at Yankee Stadium starting Thursday, they are four games behind the Toronto Blue Jays in the American League East and hold a half-game lead over the Boston Red Sox for the first AL Wild Card spot.
