TORONTO — The New York Yankees faced a challenging series against the Toronto Blue Jays, culminating in an 8-4 loss on Wednesday at Rogers Centre. Defensive errors were a significant factor, with four misplays recorded, contributing to the Yankees’ defeat and widening their American League East deficit to four games.
Cody Bellinger experienced difficulty tracking a fly ball that led to Ernie Clement’s stand-up triple, sparking the Blue Jays’ go-ahead rally. “I lost it in the sky once it got above the lights,” Bellinger explained. Despite avoiding an error himself, Bellinger’s missed play set the tone for a shaky defensive performance.
The Yankees committed four errors in total, marking their second-highest number of errors in a game this season. Max Fried’s errant throw and subsequent mistakes by Jazz Chisholm Jr., Ben Rice, and Jasson DomÃnguez further compounded the team’s struggles.
Captain Aaron Judge acknowledged the need for improvement: “We haven’t been playing that well on defense… If we give any good team extra outs, it’s not going to go well for us.”
Manager Aaron Boone expressed confidence in his team’s defensive capabilities but recognized the need for refinement: “Giving them extra outs… that’s cost us in these two series up here.”
Tensions flared during the game as Boone and pitching coach Matt Blake were ejected by home-plate umpire Manny Gonzalez. Boone remarked on Gonzalez’s reaction but emphasized that defensive lapses were the primary issue.
Max Fried returned to action after recovering from a blister injury but struggled on the mound, allowing six runs (four earned) over 5 1/3 innings. He assured that a small cut on his finger should not affect his next start.
Despite home runs from Jasson DomÃnguez, Anthony Volpe, and Aaron Judge off Chris Bassitt, who struck out eight over 7 1/3 innings, the Yankees could not overcome their defensive woes. Judge’s homer marked his 37th of the season and moved him past Alex Rodriguez on the club’s all-time list.
The Yankees have seen their performance decline since May, with a record of 21-25 through June and July. However, Judge remains optimistic about future success: “Oh, it’s coming… And when it does, watch out.”
