The New York Yankees have reached an agreement with veteran outfielder Randal Grichuk on a Minor League contract, according to a report by MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand. The team has not yet officially confirmed the signing.
Grichuk, 34, is expected to join the Yankees as a non-roster invitee at Spring Training. Over his 12-year Major League career, he has compiled a .251 batting average with 212 home runs and a .465 slugging percentage. Last season, Grichuk played in 113 games for the Arizona Diamondbacks and Kansas City Royals, recording nine home runs and a .674 OPS.
The addition of Grichuk gives the Yankees another right-handed bat in an outfield that features several left-handed hitters. Throughout his career, Grichuk has been particularly effective against left-handed pitching, posting an .819 OPS compared to .733 against right-handers.
Among current Yankees outfielders, Aaron Judge and Cody Bellinger have performed well against lefties during their careers. However, there may be opportunities for Grichuk to play in situations where Trent Grisham would otherwise face tough left-handed pitchers. Last season, Grisham had a .651 OPS in 155 plate appearances against lefties and an .870 OPS versus right-handers.
Jasson DomÃnguez is another potential candidate for the Yankees’ outfield but could start the year in the Minor Leagues. This scenario could create an opening for Grichuk to secure a spot on the Opening Day roster.
