The New York Yankees have signed right-handed pitcher Rafael Montero to a Minor League contract, inviting him to participate in Major League Spring Training as part of an open competition for bullpen spots.

Montero, who is 35 years old, played last season with the Houston Astros, Atlanta Braves, and Detroit Tigers. Over 59 appearances and 60 1/3 innings pitched, he posted a 1-2 record with a 4.48 ERA. He allowed 42 hits, issued 37 walks, and recorded 58 strikeouts.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone commented on Montero’s signing: “There’s some things we really like that he was doing last year,” Boone said. “Maybe there’s some small adjustments we can make to help him. Hopefully he can push himself into the mix.”

Montero started the previous season with Houston before being traded to Atlanta for right-hander Patrick Halligan on April 8. Later in July, he was traded again to Detroit in exchange for infielder Jim Jarvis.

During his Major League career, Montero has also played for the New York Mets (2014-17), Texas Rangers (2019-20), and Seattle Mariners (2021). His career totals include a record of 23-30 with 30 saves and a 4.68 ERA across 380 games—30 of which were starts. He was part of the Astros’ World Series-winning team in 2022.

Looking ahead to this season, the Yankees’ bullpen is expected to be led by closer David Bednar, with Camilo Doval, Fernando Cruz, and Tim Hill taking on high-leverage roles. Paul Blackburn and Ryan Yarbrough are set for multi-inning duties.

Montero will compete alongside other pitchers such as Jake Bird; Cade Winquest—ranked as the Yankees’ No.26 prospect by MLB Pipeline; Brent Headrick; Angel Chivilli; and additional candidates.

Boone emphasized the depth within the pitching staff: “I’ve talked about our pitching depth, all the way from the starters to non-roster invitees to 40-man guys pushing for a real opportunity,” Boone said. “I do feel like we have a lot of good choices.”
