Bryan Hoch reports from Atlanta on the New York Yankees’ recent victory over the Braves, highlighting Anthony Volpe’s standout performance. Volpe achieved his first multihomer game, leading the team to a 12-9 win at Truist Park. Despite external criticism and a challenging third season, Volpe remains focused on his own standards.
“I know what I’ve got to do,” said Volpe, who drove in four runs during the game. “Any of the stuff on the outside doesn’t even come close to the standard I hold myself to.”
Volpe’s performance was supported by teammate Trent Grisham, who also contributed with a decisive grand slam in the ninth inning. “To see him come out and hit two homers is awesome,” Grisham commented.
Manager Aaron Boone praised Volpe’s efforts, noting his consistent hard hits over the past week. “Tonight he hit ‘em where they can’t catch them,” Boone stated.
Despite entering Saturday’s game with only nine hits in his last 99 at-bats since June 15, Volpe remained unfazed by his slump. “I’m so confident in my work and my process that nothing changes,” he said.
Pitcher Will Warren acknowledged Volpe’s dedication and expressed hope for continued success. “He’s putting in work… To see it click tonight, it’s really nice,” Warren remarked.
The Yankees rallied from a five-run deficit, showcasing strong performances throughout their lineup. Cody Bellinger added a solo homer in the seventh inning, while Luke Weaver effectively managed a bases-loaded situation left by Jonathan Loáisiga.
“Especially in the bullpen late, you just feel like you can’t sit there and be a spectator,” Weaver noted about maintaining competitiveness within the team.
The comeback provided relief for Warren after struggling early in the game against Michael Harris II and Ozzie Albies. Despite mixed results this month, Boone emphasized keeping games close for potential rallies.
Trent Grisham summed up the team’s resilience: “Every starter and every bullpen guy knows this offense is going to keep going and not quit.”
