Brendan Samson reports that George Lombard Jr., a top prospect for the New York Yankees, made his first professional start at third base on April 15 during Double-A Somerset’s 9-6 win over Reading at TD Bank Ballpark. Lombard Jr., who is known for his defensive skills at shortstop, played third base while Anthony Volpe continues to rehab from a left-shoulder injury.
Lombard Jr.’s performance in the new position included two putouts, three assists, and one error over five innings before returning to shortstop after Volpe exited in the sixth inning. The error occurred in the fourth inning when a throw to first skipped past the baseman and allowed two runs to score. However, he recovered with a strong play in the following frame.
Offensively, Lombard Jr. continued his solid start to the season by collecting two hits and driving in two runs, including an RBI double off Phillies pitcher Zack Wheeler. His batting average rose to .469 with an on-base percentage of .528 and slugging percentage of .844 through eight games this season.
Lombard Jr., son of former Major League player George Lombard, has been advancing quickly through the minor leagues due to his baseball intelligence and maturity. Last season he played 108 games at Double-A as one of its youngest players but posted only a .695 OPS.
This year has seen improvement from Lombard Jr., highlighted by home runs early in the season and consistent hitting performances. He has hit safely in all but one game so far and has balanced four walks with four strikeouts.
It is expected that once Volpe returns to Major League play, Lombard Jr. will resume playing shortstop regularly.
