Elmer Rodríguez, the New York Yankees’ No. 3 prospect, is set to make his Major League Baseball debut against the Texas Rangers, according to an April 29 announcement. The 22-year-old pitcher joined the team at Globe Life Field after being called up from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
Rodríguez’s promotion is significant for both him and the organization, as he is regarded as one of their top young talents. He was acquired from the Boston Red Sox in December 2024 in exchange for catcher Carlos Narváez and has since impressed with a strong start to his season.
Manager Aaron Boone said, “I certainly view him as a guy that’s going to have a long career in this game as a starting pitcher. He’s coming off a phenomenal year and got off to a great start this year. He’s earned that opportunity. I feel good about him taking the ball. He’s very, very capable.” Rodríguez has posted a 1.27 ERA across four starts this season for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and had an 11-8 record with a 2.58 ERA over three levels last year.
Rodríguez shared his excitement about joining the Yankees: “It’s been a dream of mine since I was a little kid,” he said. “To get the chance to debut, especially in a Yankees uniform, is something I’ve always dreamed of. I’m happy to be here.” His parents are traveling from Puerto Rico to watch his first game.
Boone indicated that Rodríguez could remain in the rotation until left-hander Carlos Rodón returns from injury rehab: “That keeps everyone in line, which should line up Elmer to potentially get a couple of starts.” In addition to Rodríguez’s call-up, infielder Max Schuemann was recalled from Triple-A as Giancarlo Stanton moved onto the injured list due to calf strain.
Rodríguez previously represented Puerto Rico at the World Baseball Classic and features pitches including a fastball reaching up to 99 mph and an effective slider among other offerings. Boone concluded by saying: “I’ve really been impressed with a lot of our young guys that are knocking on the door, and Elmer is included in that… That should serve him well.”
